PORN!

Hello,

My name is Ben and I struggle with porn addiction!  Now that I have your attention, lets get to the blog.  For the next couple weeks I want to share my thoughts and my life experiences with everyone when it comes to porn and related topics.  I feel like this is one of those things that no one is really willing to talk about honestly and bluntly, but that’s what we are going to do here.

Porn has always been put on the back burner of topics to discuss, especially in the church and that really needs to stop! So many people especially teens and young adults struggle with this issue, and its time we started doing something about it. The 1st step is to talk about it!

My goal for the next couple weeks is to bring hope to to those who struggle with this issue, and hope to those who have a loved one who has this sturggle in their life.  I know from experience that this is a very hard situation, and I have lost/screwed up many things because of this addiction.  But, there is hope!  That I can promise.  I have been porn free for 36 days now.  I never thought that I could do that!  And now that I have, it is an amazing and freeing feeling. There is hope.

I want to leave you with one last statement, and that is no matter what you may struggle with, God loves you and will never leave you! This is amazing.

Blessings,

Ben

It has taken a lot of courage for you to write this and to come to terms with your addiction. I applaud you for it. There is great power in putting things out in the open like you just have.

You are right to say many are in the same predicament or so the statistics tell us.

I would like to encourage you in the fact that you have openly admitted your addiction and that has to be the first step to a life free of any form of addiction that has you grabbed by the neck and won’t let you live life to the full and be the best that you can be.

You are also right in saying that porn addiction is a bit of a taboo in the church and it is precisely that lack of attention to it that makes this pattern fester and so difficult to fight.

I am praying for you today. I am praying that God will honour your courageous step of openly admitting your sin and that He will give you the strength to continue free from any chains which threaten to hold you down.

May I suggest that you read the book of Psalms in the Bible. It will encourage you greatly as you realise many have pleaded with God before you to protect them from temptation and sin.

I personally know people who have overcome porn addiction, and the battle to overcome it has been very tough, but at the same time, those people have gone on to do amazing things once freed from such addiction. I would encourage you to remain strong and to be accountable to a close friend or relative with whom you can be totally honest and who can strengthen you when you fear you may fall again.

    Blessings and prayers to you,

    Hi Ben!
Totally agree that this is a huge problem in the church, and one that we’re not talking nearly enough about. FWIW, the best advice on this that I’ve found is written by a guy by the name of David Powlison: http://healtheland.wordpress.com/2008/08/23/breaking-pornography-addiction-david-powlison/.
